Commercial Pilot License CPL

The Commercial Pilot License (CPL) is for the aspiring professional pilot. This license allows you to transport both passengers and cargo. After completing your Commercial Pilot License at Bucephalus Air, you will enter the professional aviation world and work in highly professional environments. When you do your Commercial Pilot License at Bucephalus Air, you will be trained by Industry-Leading Instructors that will make every second of your training count. CPL Requirements:

Upon enrolment at Bucephalus Air, you are required to go do your Civil Aviation Authority Medical Class I. This Certificate is valid for up to 12 months if you are under the age of 40.

Commencement Age and Citizenship

The minimum legal age to acquire your Commercial Pilot License is 18. With this, you also have to be a holder of a valid Private Pilot License (PPL) and have a valid Night Rating.

To train at Bucephalus Air, you have to be either a South African citizen or be a holder of a valid South African study permit. 

CPL Theory

We offer ground school immediately upon your enrolment no matter what time of the year you sign in.
Passing the theoretical subjects will be the most difficult part of your Commercial Pilot License. Together with our Integrated training approach, study guide, Industry-Leading Instructors and your hard work, you will be able to fly as the professional pilot you have always wanted to be.

Our goal is not only to acquire enough information to pass the test but also to shape you in becoming a great pilot in a protected environment. Here you will learn how to be professional, what good airmanship is and how to treat your fellow pilots.

You are required to pass 9 theoretical written examinations including the Instrument Rating Exam.

The Theoretical Subjects Include the Following:
• Air Law
• Meteorology
• Navigation
• Principles of Flight
• Flight Performance and Planning
• Aircraft Technical and General
• Human Performance
• General Radio Proficiency

The ground school lectures will be approximately 64 hours. Along with the theoretical subject, you will be doing an Online General Radio Proficiency test. After test completion, you will obtain a certificate.

CPL Practical

With our Integrated training approach, our Industry-Leading Instructors who will be available to assist and guide you with anything and your hard work, you will be able to fly as the professional pilot you have always wanted to be.

Practical Flight Hours

Duration: ± 12 – 18 months

Total Flight Hours: ± 200 Hours Flight Training

  • 25 Hours Dual (Flying with an instructor).
  • 100 Hours PIC (Pilot In Command).
  • Each Flight Session will include a theoretical briefing on what to prepare for your flight. This will happen before and after each flight. You will have approximately 18 hrs of briefings.
  • 5 Hours Complex Aircraft Rating.
  • 5 Hours PIC hours Night Rating Flying.
  • 20 Hours X Country.

You are required to pass a Practical Flying Test with Designated Flight Examiner (DFE) assigned by the SACAA (South African Civil Aviation Authority).
